January Twentieth

WHEN a babe appears in our lives
There is another opportunity to rejoice
And find ourselves flooded with optimism and hope.
We picture ourselves giving wise guidance
That will be sucked up as if it were clear cold water
On the floor of a dry parched desert.
We will be wise,
We will be patient.
We will listen and we will praise.
We will love and nurture and inform
And guard.
And if we are lucky we will get love in return.
Each child must make his/her own mistakes
And the elders must bravely smile and cry a little.
